Wanted: A Life

It isn't just me, I think my whole family needs a life. I think this because I doubt if their reaction was motivated by a good blog post for me.

TURTLES:

"Spring is here and once again, turtles are emerging from their winter hibernation. Many of the slow moving critters will attempt the extremely hazardous trek across roads and highways in search of food and nesting sites. Unfortunately, a turtle’s thin shell is no match for motor vehicles. Highway fatalities are devastating for turtle populations. In Ontario, we are lucky to have all eight of Canada’s native turtle species. Sadly, seven of these species (the Spotted, Wood, Blanding’s, Eastern Spiny Softshell, Common Musk Common Map and Snapping Turtles) have been classified by provincial and national authorities, as endangered, threatened or of special concern. The good news is that there are now 700 turtle crossing signs installed on highways throughout Ontario, thanks to the dedication and efforts of Turtle S.H.E.L.L Tortue (a registered charitable organization). You, as caring citizens, can help by paying close attention to the road and shoulders in these designated turtle crossing areas and near any water-bordering areas from April to September."

The above is an excerpt from a post by this organization. http://www.turtleshelltortue.org/

With that being said (or written) let me continue on with my lack of life story. I was getting dressed for work the other day when I looked out the window.

Me: Hey there's a turtle on our lawn, quick go get the camera!

The whole family rushed out to see the turtle. DH had the camera and took several shots. Seriously, I have never seen four people move that fast. I doubt that they could move that fast if the house was on fire.

Yup, I definitely need some excitement in my life!

No more smoke signals

This is a tale of two companies.
A few weeks ago ,DH decided that enough was enough. Dial Up was too slow and we kept getting disconnected after 10 minutes of activity. This is no tconducive to web surfing/downloading by any stretch of the imagination.

There are very few Internet companies servicing my area (aka the boonies) so there is little to choose from. The one company we did decide upon has two install contractors and this is where my story begins:

Installer number one was rather eager to make an appointment.
"Are you sure no one will be home on Monday?"
"Yes I'm sure"
"What about Tuesday?"
"Same thing....."
He shows up on Wednesday, because I'm not working that day and he has no other choice to accept this. After standing on my roof twice and calling to see if the nearest tower is undergoing some unscheduled maintenance, he tells me that the very tall trees surrounding my property are interfering and he can't even get a bar. He tells me that he'll put my name on the list if a much closer tower becomes available. He leaves with $30 of my money.

With head hung low, I shuffle back to my Neanderthal cave to once again send the equivalent of smoke signal emails.

DH is determined in his need for speed and, when he gets home, calls our neighbour to find out how she got high speed with the same Internet company. Answer: she used installer company number two.

Company number two asks questions when we make the appointment. They want to know they layout of our property and surrounding area, do we have tall trees....etc. All things that would affect us getting a signal.

The appointment is made. This time two guys show up and they bring an extender with them. They test the signal from the top of our antenna: two bars. They go up even higher: Five bars.

Moral of the story. High speed Internet is a wonderful thing, but people who know what they are doing are priceless.

Bust a Stash

If you have ever wondered "how do I use up all those odd balls in my stash or how do I get rid of all my stash so that I can start over"......I have the solution for you.

Rachel John....EXTEREME KNITTING

I'm of two minds about this. Part of me says that this woman is a genius and that I should just leave it at that, the other half wants to knit my own mattress. I almost regret giving away all those odd balls.

I wanna Real Man

Since the guy who works opposite shifts from me will come into work and 90% of the time will find me knitting, he decided that he would treat me to a knitting video. He found Real Men Knit on DVD at the local library last weekend and brought it to work for me to watch on my next shift.

While I don't want to give this production two thumbs down, I felt that it lacked in a few places. Any topic that was discussed was only briefly mentioned. I was hoping for something with a bit more meat of the matter. The movie talked briefly about how, historically hand knitting was a male dominated occupation. That is, until the knitting machine made hand knitting no longer financial feasible so the task was handed off to women. (Sounds familiar!!!)

Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and and host of average Joes were interviewed. It turns out that both men and myself knit for the same reasons: texture, colour, to alleviate boredom, stress relief, to make something for a loved one, because it's fun...... These are all reasons (plus several more) why I pick up the sticks and string.

From Jocks to stressed out tech geeks and everyone in between were featured on this video.

Now before I go any further, I want to make it perfectly clear that I know knitters come in all shapes and sizes and have a wide assortment of appearances from formal to very casual. A few of the knitting guys were visibly pierced and I don't have a problem with that, at all (honestly).

However...........watching a guy stick a cable needle through the piercing in his nose (because that's where you can keep it so it doesn't get lost) and then hold the tip of it in his mouth is something no one should have to see.

But I digress.....

Knitting is a craft that is so versatile that it can appeal to every different type of person. What I love about knitting could be different for someone else, but it doesn't matter. I get excited about cables and they might drive the person next to me to the frog pond. I can't stand knitting mittens and someone else could live for making them. It's all wonderful as there is room in this craft for everything and everyone.

So to use a South African saying from Brandon Mably.....when it comes to knitting "what lifts your skirts?"

Here, there be sick people....

I've had and interesting few days.....too say the least.

On Wednesday I woke up feeling out of sorts but figured that it would eventually pass. When I got to work the feeling escalated into pain. I managed to hang on for a few hours but eventually, I had to call it quits. There is nothing like working with a bunch of guys and telling them that your pain is located in your ''female'' parts.

I called DH at work and he came immediately as he works only a short express bus ride from where I work. Off to the hospital we go. After a three hour wait I'm in an emerg room with a doctor who examines me. As he leaves the room, to order x-rays, he tells me that I won't get anything to eat or drink in case they need to operate. At this point he suspects that it's my appendix.

Off to the x-ray....one nurse wheels me off to imaging and leaves. An orderly wheels in an elderly man and parks him right in front of me. I don't want to be rude and have this man think that I am starring at him, so I lower my eyes. EEEEEWWWWW is that what I think it is? I'm now starring at his urine collection bag. This is gross on just so many levels. I do the only thing I can, I turn my wheelchair around so I'm looking down the hallway.

When I get my x-ray, I realize that I've sunk to a new low. The first two require me to stand up. There on the display is my name, my ID number, the fact that I'm female and my age (and not the one that I tell everybody that I am...the real one). I am currently in a hospital gown and my back side is exposed. I am experiencing humiliation from the front and the back.

I return to my emerg room where the doctor tells me that nothing on the x-rays can explain my pain but that he would do something to help me manage the pain. At this point I am on IV so in goes the gravol then the morphine......1....2....3.....4....5......WHOA!!!!!! that stuff works fast. DH is with me and enjoying the fact that I am now stoned out of my mind.

The doctor returns and this time he brings reinforcements.....the surgeon, who after poking and prodding me so much that I want to clock him because IT STILL HURTS, decides that it's not worth it to open me....yet. The doctor returns to tell me that he would like me to stay overnight. I'm still high and still in pain, so I agree. However the pain stops a few hours later and I ask to go home. Let's face it, watching an old guy walk back and forth in the hallway, in his pyjamas, is not my idea of entertainment.

My family doctor, a cautious man, enters the scene, scares DH with all the things that could happen to me still, in the middle of the night so that is why I should stay. I sent DH home with a list of things I need and get the doctor to allow me something to drink. He puts a midnight deadline on the liquids and I'm in a real room.

The next morning I get an ultrasound. This tells the doctor what all the fuss was about the day before. His best guess was an ovarian cyst bursting.

So what have I learnt from this experience? While I found the sensation of being stoned on morphine unique, I am in no hurry to repeat it, as it made knitting virtually impossible.

Shake...Rattle...and ROLL!!!

I know that it's just a car and that my only concern should be thankfulness that DH was alone in the car and that he was not injured.

But I really liked that car.

The problem is...we are now down to one vehicle until the check arrives from the insurance company AND there is an annual sale at a yarn store in Ottawa plus a closing out sale at another place. AND I CAN'T GET TO EITHER OF THEM!!!!!

YES!!! I'm pouting....

Widow Women

There are many reasons why women lose their husbands. These reasons include, but are not limited to:

Other women
Playing Sports
Watching Sports
Gambling

Drugs
Forgetting your birthday three years in a row so you've killed him and buried the body, on a moonless night, in the garden, behind the house.

Oops.....I digress...that and this is no Alfred Hitchcock movie.

I have lost my husband!!!!!

I have lost him to Rockband guitar solos.

I am a Wii widow.

I should have known that when he suggested buying it, this past Christmas, for the kids, he was including himself.

I'm going slightly Mad

I can't blame Ravelry!
I can't blame the Yarn Harlot!
I can't even blame it on Shelley Kang!
I place the blame, in its entirety, on Emily.

There I was, minding my own business, when Emily began to knit a mitered square, using leftover sock yarn. She informed me that once a million of these were done, she would then sew them together for an afghan.

Now speaking as someone who claims to have invented the crazy sock, I have to ask myself....Why didn't I think of this first? Could it be that I'm a little too obsessed with socks? But really...is that such a bad thing? I've been told that occasionally I'm a perfectly normal individual, but I think that the jury is still out on that one.

Here is proof of my decent into Madness!

I realize that I've only just begun this project, but I've already come to the conclusion that I have to:

A) buy more sock yarn

or

B) hold some type of contest thing. I would ask everyone for donations of their leftover sock yarn. Everyone who sent/gave me some would then have their name go into a draw for a full skein of some very yummy sock yarn.

I'll let you know what happens.

And if you're wondering.....and even if you're not........the mitered square, currently on the needles, I have a pair of socks made with that sock yarn. It is another random dye job. The teen called the colour "vomit" and wanted nothing to do with it.

That is until I knit up a pair of socks with the yarn.....NOW she wants them.

But who can blame her......they're gorgeous. Now before any of you choke on that last statement, I do put these socks in the "only a mother could love" category. So I don't want any comments about how my ugly socks have somehow offended the stylish sense of colour among the fibre arts community. Considering some of the stupid things that the Canadian government has paid big bucks for because someone called it art, my socks are the least of your worries.

Remember to Always......

Voice in my head: Remember to always tie your skein in three places when you block it.

Me: Yes!

Voice in my head: Remember to always tie your skein in three places when you block it.

Me: Absolutely!

Voice in my head: Remember to always tie your skein in three places when you block it.

Me: I've got it ingrained in my inner most being, I'll never forget. Thank you voice in my head.

Voice in my head: Remember to always tie your skein in three places when you throw said skein into the dye pot.

Me: Yes!

I think that the voice in my head should have reminded me on that last point a couple of more times.

I have no words to describe what I went through to fix the brain fart I had when I dyed this skein.....even though the other three skeins, dyed at the same time some how managed to get themselves tied securely.

I dare you not to laugh

A joke about flowers.

Grandma was visiting her family and having a lovely time. One morning while she was in the kitchen, her 19 year old grand daughter entered the room. The grand daughter was wearing a see-thru blouse and no bra.

"My dear," says Grandma, who is more than just a little shocked, "You're not going out like that are you?"

"Of course, Grandma, I want to show off my flower buds"

The next morning, the grand daughter goes into the kitchen and finds Grandma there. Grandma is wearing a see-thru blouse and no bra.

"Grandma," the grand daughter exclaims, with a look of horror on her face," You're not going out like that are you?"

"Of course dear, I want to show off my hanging baskets."

If you build it.....

......they will hatch.

The Internet is a wonderful place. It's full of all kinds of information. So when DH got it into his head to build an incubator, he went straight for the triple W. And much to his own surprise, it worked. On Friday night I was at the computer and heard a chirping.

This is the little guy starting to escape.

Using a few purchased items and some things we had around the house, this is what he built. While I'm not surprised that something he built worked, I am surprised that something this simple worked.

  1. a cheap Styrofoam cooler $3
  2. a candy thermometer $3
  3. the plastic from a picture frame $1
  4. a dimmer switch $6.49
  5. fan (already had)
  6. light bulb and socket (already had)
  7. container for water (already had)
You've got to like a DH with an unusual stash of gadgets.

This is chicken #1, we've had two more hatch since. The eggs were added at regular intervals so hopefully there will be more throughout the week. Cross your fingers because hopefully by next week end we should see a couple of ducklings emerge from their shell.

These little ones are almost 24 hours old and with any luck will go to replace my aging hens.

****Lesson on chickens****

Chickens will slow down on the egg production, due to age, and eventually stop laying eggs. While I like my chickens and treat them very well, there comes a point where you've got to let go and cull the flock. We're passed the sentimentality of feeding chickens that don't do anything. It's kind of like forced retirement for the baby boomers and hiring a batch of college graduates.

Unanswered Questions of the Universe

Yesterday morning, Destructo Boy came downstairs to get ready for school. He was carrying three containers.

DB: I want to bring my fluff to school.

Me: What?

DB: I want to bring my fluff to school.

Me: Did you pull that fluff from the inside of your sleeping bag?

DB: (SILENCE)

Me: That was BAD.....BAD.....BAD..... (stunned silence) Just get ready for school.

I still have yet to find out:
  1. Why he pulled the fluff out of his sleeping bag (said sleeping bag is on it's last legs anyway).
  2. Why he put it into containers.
  3. Why he wanted to bring it to school.
But seriously folks, even with my imagination, there is no way I could make this up.

And the Winner is....

Drum roll please......

Deluxe Yarns emailed me this morning and asked for my address. They told me to expect my prize in the mail and that the photos of the winning socks were on there blog.

This is me, hyperventalating.

I checked out their blog.

This is me, doing the happy dance and squealing with delight.

My crazy socks came in first place.

So without further ado here is photographic evidence of how truly crazy I really am:

Thanks Mad Mad for the idea. Next time I'll try to outsource the weaving in of the ends but I don't think that I know anyone, besides myself, who is that crazy.

He Shoots, She Scores

This is what Ottawa does on a Saturday night. They go to a hockey game and cheer on the Senators. DH isn't one for a sporting event but when a friend phoned on Friday night and offered us tickets, I jumped at the chance. DH knew that he had no choice, so he agreed to go along.

We had good seats on the 200 level. After we dealt with the long line ups to get into the parking lot and the game started, even DH had to admit that he was enjoying himself. It was an exciting game, even the sock had fun.

The nice thing about working on a pair of plain dress socks for DH is that you can easily watch the game and get lots of knitting done. I am working with a llama/merino/nylon blend that I bought from a local rancher. I figured that after last Thursday, he deserved them. I had already started the socks and felt that it was time to get going on them after a year of procrastination.

It was a good game. A fan got hit in the face with a puck, two players got into a fight and they launched hotdogs into the stands. All in all, it was a very typical game. HOWEVER.....

See the score board?????
See the big screen on the score board????? (BTW it is on all four sides)

During a pause in the game the powers that be did some advertising for Dentyne Ice. They have something called the KISS CAM. They scan the stands looking for couples. If you see yourself on the big screen they ask that you turn to the person next to you and give them a kiss. Much to my surprise, yours truely and the sweater boy got caught on the KISS CAM.

So in the spirit of the moment, we puckered up and kissed.

I can't believe I did that.....

Do you understand what I did????

I kissed my DH on camera in front of 20,199 people.

Talk about a public display of affection.

Tank Avoidance Techniques

I don't like to do housework...yeah I know....you've heard this one before. But I really don't like to do it. There is nothing creative in the whole picking up, vacuuming, laundry, washing thing. No matter how I try to convince myself that this is what I should be doing, something more interesting comes along.

HOWEVER.......when you are trying to avoid knitting on a certain tank top, your brain goes a little screwy. It was a snow day and the kids were home. This always means if I sat down to work on something I wanted to knit, world war three would have started. Since I'm all about world peace (especially in my own home), I had to find something to do.

DH and I sit in very comfy chairs to watch TV. Needless to say, there is a generous amount of knitting surrounding the area. My brain is screwy, I'm trying to avoid a tank top and avoid having to deal with crisis negotitations, so what do I do? Sigh...I clean.

Now before you think that I've lost my marbles, I am only tidying up my TV Knitting area. (Other knitting areas will come later) In this flurry of action, I managed to get a grocery bag of yarn together to be given away, throw out a few things plus I found a WIP. I had started these socks about 3 1/2 years ago and finished all but the toe of the second sock. They were supposed to be for DD#1 but ended up being too small.

I should title this post....why I had more than one kid.

I tried the first sock on DD#2 and they fit...more importantly...she likes them. I finished the second sock and she is wearing them to school today.

UPDATE

We did get the water back on after 30 hours. I have never enjoyed a shower so much in my life. DH says that next time it won't take as long because he now knows what he is doing. This by the way, is a very scary thought. And Kristen....you crack me up!!!!

You don't want to be me!

Water....the very source of life!!!! But in order to have it, I need three things as I live in the country!!!

  1. A well....check
  2. Electricity......check
  3. A working pump......now here comes my sob story
Our pump started making wierd noises, so on Sunday DH took it upon himself to "FIX" it. So without filling sinks, filling the tub, or even a few stock pots, he took the thing apart. This started at 2 pm in the afternoon. It is now 26 hours later, DH has gone to Ottawa to get a part. He promised me that the water would be back on by sometime tonight.

Do you understand what I am going through? I turn on a tap....no water. This means no showers or even flushing the toilet. People...I am reduced to melting snow to flush because I don't want either of my washrooms to smell like an Ontario Provincial Park outhouse. This is desperation! I am in such need of some chocolate right about now.

When I think that I could sink no lower...I wonder what will happen if DH can't get the pump working by tomorrow....I have to go to work!!!!

I other news, I've put the tank aside for a few days. It mocks me mercilessly. I do my best to ignore it as I work on a cardi with Cleckheaton country silk. I am so looking forward to adding the cardi to my wardrobe that I will suffer through the taunts of the tank and the occasional phone call from the client.

Trying desperately to catch up

I read a wide variety of blogs. While I've been largely ignoring my own blog, I have been visiting others and thought that I'd give you an overview of how I spend my time on the Internet. While I visit more blogs than this, it's the best I can do with rambunctious kids in the background.

Mad Mad got off her death bed to let us know about the importance of a Tuna sandwich. She also discovered the whereabouts of the kid we all used to blame stuff on, when we were young. This kid didn't live at our house but always seem to be capable of household destruction. (or at least that's who we blamed) This kid is now all grown up and cleaning Mad Mad's house.

One of Mad's readers had a wardrobe malfunction at the police station. She was trying to get some information for a story.
In a deep husky voice "So Officer, how was your day?"

Georgie was hit but a truck, but fortunately is recovering with the aid of some gorgeous fibre. Tinkingbell gave away Australia. I was hoping to win, but it's probably best that she gave it to someone local. I learnt that Cathy has pain issues. Either that or she is willing to endure anything for the sake of knitting.

Jejune is in the middle of a move, having babies with attitude and is about to become famous. Stay tuned people. As well as Georgie, Kristen and Nancy have been posting some AB FAB recipes. Nancy's house has also been taken over by short winter type people. Mandie has recently been converted to blogism so we'll have to see what happens.

Poor Taph! I fear that she'll never get to wear hand knit socks ever again. I believe it's a family conspiracy and they are plotting against her. This lady also pumps out hats faster than you can say "Store wide sale, all regular priced yarn is 20% off" I am in awe of this woman.

Franklin recently posted a request for a Dolores body double. The poor gal needed a respite from her notoriety by creating a cunning ruse. I entered Isolde as a possible candidate in this contest. I'll let you know if she wins.

Here is how things are going with the commissions. The first is getting near the end. The sleeves are done and both the front an the back are knit up to the armholes. The tank top yarn has been swatched. The last is a Jo Sharp design that a client wants me to finish. She knit up to the armpits and is worried about messing up the top portion.

Lastly, someone recently found my blog by googling "Turkey sex scarf hidden video" Hmmm not sure how I feel about that.

Slow Down

Now these are two words that no one will ever say to me while I knit. The will and desire are there, but that is where it stops. I've got everything on the list that one needs to become a fast knitter.
Wooden Needles.
Bamboo Needles.
Turbo Needles.
Really Nice Yarn.
Comfy Knitting Chair.
Uninterrupted Knitting Time.
The ability to Knit without looking at my work.

Now I've had people tell me that I knit quickly, but they've all been under the age of 12. So in my mind, it doesn't count. You may say that I'll never be able to knit as quickly as I want because, let's face it, I am human, after all. You would be quite right to say this. But I think that because I put myself into the slow knitters category, it is the reason for so many UFOs.

Here I am, knitting away on a gorgeous sweater. But wait....this is taking FOREVER to finish. I am so slow, I'll never get it done. Better start a new project. So here it is...am I a slow knitter or am I fickle and easily get bored? Hmmmmmm good question.

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee aka the
Yarn Harlot said, in a recent interview, that knitting should come from yo
ur entertainment budget and not the clothing budget. If this be the case, I really get a bang for my buck with yarn.

I know what you are thinking.....It is the journey and not the destination. While this may be true, I am being kept awake at night by the scary screaming of current UFOs. I won't even get into telling you about the voices in my head from the UFOs that were discarded long ago.

(With humble apologies to Simon&Garfunkel)
Slow down, you knit too fast, you've got to make the sweater last
Just knittin' down the raglan sleeves, lookin' for an end and feelin' woolly

Feeling woolly

Hello knitter, what's cha knowing, I've come to watch your sweater growin'
Ain't cha got no FOs for me, do-it-do-do, feelin' woolly

Feeling woolly

I've got no end in sight, no deadlines to keep
I'm tired and frustrated and ready to weep
And now this #$%^$##$ needle has dropped all its stitches on me

Yarn I love you, all is woolly.
Yes, this is me, going mental on you all.

But from the happy, feel good file, I am making progress on my Jane Ellison sweater. AND I've even finished something recently (you'll never guess what) but like the idiot I am, I bought it to work and left it there, without photographing it first. Never mind that, here's the sweater.

Waste Not.... Want Not

DS (on the basement stairs): Daddy, I have have your beer.

DH (in the basement): Well, go put it back.

DS: There's still some left.

DH: Put the bottle back on the counter.

DS: There's some left and I don't want you to waste it so I thought that I would bring down to you.

DH: Ahhh.....thanks.....put it back and I'll finish it later.

DS: Okay....

I'm having severe deja vu. Only the roles are reverse and it involves a glass of milk
.

Did you mark down Sept. 24th in your calendar? Honestly, I totally forgot about it until this afternoon. Mine went by without incident but perhaps crazy man with sign was referring to something happened on a previous Sept 24th.

1948 - Phil Hartman, Canadian actor (d. 1998)

1962 - Nia Vardalos, Canadian actress

Stop all WIPs, Jane Ellison is coming to town

All of my WIPs have been put on hold. This is not exactly something new . Thanks to falling in love with a new project and a bad case of startitis, this has happened before. This time I have a valid reason for not finishing what I have on the go. Jane Ellison is coming to Ottawa, so I have to make one of her designs.(It would be rude not to...that is what I keep telling myself). While she does a lot of design work with Noro Yarns, she is coming to promote the Mirasol project.

Jane has written a book with designs using all four yarns, all spun in Peru, that were developed for this project.
"The Mirasol Project is named after a young Quechua girl who, with her brother, tends 350 alpacas. Its aim is to fight poverty and encourage community development. As well as providing accommodation, meals and health-care, the boarding-house will be a centre where the children can develop personal, occupational and communication skills and study techniques in specialised after-school workshops."
I think that my swap socks will get some MAJOR mojo when being photographed with a famous designer.

Any one up for Killer Karaoke?

Saturday I went to a birthday party for a co-worker of DH. It was held at a pub three minutes from her
place so she could walk home after consuming large quantities of alcohol. (Her words not mine.) Sigh.....there's something about attending parties where you don't know anyone......although there were highlights of the evening.

One woman talked about a friend having a delayed honeymoon. I mentioned that after 18 years, I'm still waiting for one, although my trip to Australia came close. Another told us about the etiquette course she took and we joked about the proper way to pass ketchup and eat fries (chips). This all brings us to something another party attendee said......are your ready for this????

TINA: I had an Australian boyfriend who
told me once, when we were out to dinner, that he could teach me to eat properly, if I wanted.

You should have heard the gasps of horror from the woman at the table.

TINA: He quickly went to the EX category.

Another asked if I worked at Foreign Affairs as well (this is where DH works). I simply replied "No". If I had been Mad Mad, I would have replied " I am a conflict resolution negotiator specializing in crisis situations"
