Every year, corporate sponsors, shell out big bucks to support Winterlude. And I, for one, am glad that they do.
To celebrate all this snowy goodness we get her in the Ottawa area, the National Capital Commission puts on Winterlude. You can skate on the Rideau canal (the world's longest skating rink), watch a free concert, see the results of the international ice carving competition, enjoy some fine dining at a local restaurant (with special Winterlude deals, but what my kids like best is Snowflake Kingdom.
Giant slides are constructed out of snow and are then hosed down to make them super fast. We had a blast! Even DH handled the crowds and line ups quite well. We had a blast! Words can not describe how much fun we had...so on to the pictures.
In addition to the slides, there were shows. The teen is in love with 4 of the seven guys in this hip hop dance troup.

This is just one of the snow sculptures displayed as part of the National competition.
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Quebec winter carnival, there was a recreation of how settlers lived 400 years ago. BTW they didn't live in a fort made of snow. (Despite the abundance of this type of building material at this time of year.)
So when my kids get too old to enjoy something like this, I'll have to rent some kids. Because an old fart going down the slides, laughing all the way, without any kids, will really stand out.
P.S. Almost forgot to mention....95% of Winterlude is Free.:) Gotta like that!!!

Last Sunday the Ottawa Valley got dumped on.....by a lot of snow that is. Throughout the area, we got between 37-50 cm. That's 14.8- 20 inches for those of you not metrically inclined. Insane is what I call it. I mean really people....what are we suppose to do with all this snow? Here is view from my back door during the storm. The blurriness, this time, cannot be blamed on my camera or photographic skills. The fuzzy look is from the continual curtain of snow falling.
This is my front deck. It's kinda sad that we haven't removed the snow from the last massive snowstorm we had 2 weeks ago. I've been busy knitting...not sure what DH's excuse is. I decided to stretch my legs and do a bit of shoveling. and discovered at it's highest point, the snow on my deck is up to my mid thigh.
And that is just wrong!!!! Very Wrong!!!
The snow is still powdery so I quickly make progress. I got rid of about 1/5 of the snow.....just enough to look impressive but not enough to make DH think that I'll do the whole job myself. So as I am putting in all this effort, working up a sweat, engaging in this backbreaking work...what is my dog doing??????
She is just standing there....watching me. That dog is is a born supervisor, I think that she gets it from the kids.
I've finished the green sweater. I didn't take a picture of it as I couldn't wait to get it out the door. I really need to knit something for me. Wahhhhh, I can't! I've got two more projects that I've been hired to do. Enough of my pity party.....

It looks like Old Man Winter is finally here. This is the scene as I look outside of my garage. You can see my driveway, the crab apple tree on the right and our wooded area on the left.
Problem with this photo is what it doesn't show you. It doesn't show you the ice pellets coming down making the roads very slippery. So slippery, the buses were cancelled today for our area and this causes many problems.
Problems
1) Since the buses aren't running because of bad weather the kids are home today.
2) I picked up a copy of The Friday Night Knitting Club and was planning to read it today. I can't, because since the kids are home today, I can't seem to find a quite place in the house to read. I move to one room and they follow me there only to start an argument (this is a never ending cycle)
3) Since the kids are not being constantly occupied by school activities they assume there is nothing to do, so in comes the whining and complaining. I won't let them watch TV all day, so it seems I've taken away their only source of entertainment
4) The kids need mittens. They younger ones at least as the teen is too cool for warm hands. After digging in the winter box, I find all kinds of scarves and hats. I also find one pair of pink mittens and 6 single mittens. So in order for my kids not to get teased about wearing mismatched mittens I must, at great sacrifice, knit mittens. Did I already mention I hate knitting mittens????
5) Tomorrow is a PD day so there's no school tomorrow. This makes it a 4 day weekend for them....and for me!
